About Stained Glass as an Art Form
Stained glass as a craft dates back to at least the 7th century, when colored glass was used in European church windows. By the 12th and 13th centuries, Gothic cathedrals were being designed specifically to incorporate vast panels of stained glass as their primary light source — the windows at Chartres Cathedral, completed around 1220, remain some of the most technically accomplished examples ever made. The "leading" technique — using strips of lead to separate colored glass pieces — has changed remarkably little in 800 years.
The Art Nouveau movement of the 1890s–1910s brought stained glass out of the church and into the home, most famously through Louis Comfort Tiffany's studio in New York. Tiffany pioneered a new technique using opalescent glass — glass with a milky, iridescent quality — and designed lamps, windows, and decorative objects that became synonymous with a lush, nature-inspired aesthetic: dragonflies, wisteria, peonies, peacock feathers. His work is now among the most collected decorative art in American history.
The stained glass aesthetic has never fully gone out of fashion — it resurfaces in every generation that decides maximalism is back, which is to say: constantly.
