About The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai
Hokusai created The Great Wave off Kanagawa around 1831 as the first print in his series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji — though the mountain itself appears small and distant behind the wave, almost an afterthought. Hokusai was in his early 70s when he made it. The image belongs to the ukiyo-e tradition of Japanese woodblock printing, and its bold outlines, flat color, and dynamic composition directly influenced the Impressionists, particularly Monet and Van Gogh, who collected Japanese prints avidly. It is now one of the most recognized artworks in the world, held in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
