About The Dance Class by Edgar Degas

Degas painted multiple versions of The Dance Class between 1871 and 1876, depicting rehearsals at the Paris Opéra under the instruction of ballet master Jules Perrot. Degas was fascinated not by performance but by effort — the repeated practice, the waiting, the physical discipline that made performance possible. He had unusual access to the backstage world of the Opéra, and the scenes he depicted were often composed from memory and sketches rather than painted on site. His vision of ballet shifted from romantic idealization to something more observational and modern. The most famous version of The Dance Class is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris; another hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
