About The Dance by Henri Matisse
Matisse painted The Dance in 1910 as a commission for the Russian art collector Sergei Shchukin, intended to hang at the base of his Moscow mansion's staircase. Five nude figures in a ring, red against green and blue — ecstatic, simplified, radically flat. Matisse had been sketching dancers at a Montmartre bal musette, and the composition distills that energy down to pure movement and color. Shchukin reportedly lost his nerve when the finished work arrived — it was too scandalous for his guests — but ultimately kept it. After the Russian Revolution, the painting was nationalized and is now in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. A preparatory version is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
