About Ophelia by John Everett Millais

Millais painted Ophelia in 1851–1852 depicting the moment from Shakespeare's Hamlet when Ophelia, driven mad by grief, drowns in a stream while singing. The landscape was painted entirely outdoors in Ewell, Surrey — Millais worked for five months by the river, battling insects and cold — while the model, Elizabeth Siddal, posed for four months in a bathtub filled with water kept warm by oil lamps. She later developed a severe cold. The flowers in the painting are botanically accurate and each carries symbolic weight: pansies for love, nettles for pain, daisies for innocence. The painting is now in Tate Britain in London.
