About Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer
Vermeer painted Girl with a Pearl Earring around 1665 in Delft, Netherlands — and almost nothing else is known for certain. The girl's identity is unknown; she may have been a pupil, a daughter, or a model. The painting is not technically a portrait but a tronie, a Dutch term for a character study of an idealized face. The pearl earring itself has been debated: some art historians believe it may actually be glass or tin, given that a real pearl of that size would be extraordinarily rare. The painting has been in the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague since 1902, and inspired Tracy Chevalier's 1999 novel of the same name.
