About Café Terrace at Night by Vincent van Gogh
Van Gogh painted Café Terrace at Night in September 1888 in Arles, France — one of his first paintings to depict a night scene without using black, relying entirely on the contrast of deep blues and warm yellows to convey darkness and artificial light. The café still exists: the Place du Forum in Arles, now renamed Café van Gogh, maintains the yellow awning. Van Gogh described the painting in a letter to his sister: "I enormously enjoy painting on the spot at night." It was one of the paintings he sent to his brother Theo in Paris. It now hangs in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands.
