About The Scream by Edvard Munch
Munch created The Scream in multiple versions between 1893 and 1910 — two paintings, two pastels, and several prints. The image was inspired by a specific moment: walking with friends at sunset, he wrote in his diary that he sensed "an infinite scream passing through nature," and the sky turned blood red. The figure in the foreground is typically interpreted as Munch himself overwhelmed by anxiety, though some scholars argue the agonized figure represents nature itself. The most famous version, a tempera on cardboard from 1893, is held at the National Museum in Oslo. A pastel version sold at auction in 2012 for nearly $120 million.
