GetBullish Revives "Brooklyn, Not Billionaires" Campaign as Oligarchs Consolidate Power

Feminist gift shop emphasizes shopping small as antidote to corporate consolidation and bulk toilet paper

The campaign, originally launched during the 2024 holiday season, takes on renewed relevance as wealth concentration and corporate consolidation continue accelerating. GetBullish founder Jennifer Dziura argues that holiday shopping decisions represent tangible opportunities to support small and women-owned businesses.

"As oligarchs take over the world, it's more important than ever to shop small," said Dziura. "And also, isn't it a little more special to buy your gifts from us than from the same megacorporation where you buy bulk toilet paper?"

Beyond Convenience: Gift-Giving with Values

The campaign challenges the assumption that corporate retail platforms offer superior convenience or value, particularly for gift purchases where presentation and meaning matter. GetBullish emphasizes that gifts sourced from the same retailer as household essentials lack the personal touch customers often seek.

The Brooklyn warehouse operation ships multiple items in consolidated packages, meaning customers who purchase gifts for entire families receive one thoughtfully packed box instead of multiple separate deliveries typical of major e-commerce platforms. This consolidation reduces packaging waste while simplifying gift receipt and storage.

"We had customers last December ordering 15-20 gifts who received everything in one carefully organized shipment," Dziura noted. "Compare that to daily doorstep deliveries from corporate platforms that require you to stay home all week collecting packages."

Infrastructure Concerns Drive Shopping Choices

The campaign highlights growing concerns about corporate control extending beyond retail into essential services and infrastructure. Dziura points to examples like major e-commerce platforms owning cloud computing services that power half the internet, medical practices, and entertainment studios.

"At what point do we say enough?" Dziura asks, framing small business shopping as one accessible form of resistance to further consolidation. "Every purchase decision either builds up the second-largest company in America (which also owns your data and possibly now your doctor's office and the entire infrastructure of the internet), or, you know, keeps some cool gals in business. And gives you a better answer to 'This is so cool, where did you get it?'"

The message resonates particularly with customers concerned about wealth inequality, corporate political influence, and the erosion of local business communities across American cities and towns.

Curated Gifts Under $20 from Independent Makers

GetBullish's holiday inventory emphasizes affordable options, with most items priced under $30 and many under $15. The collection features products from over 200 vendors, with nearly all being women-owned small businesses.

Popular gift categories include notebooks and stationery, sticker books filled with themed stickers, hair accessories, funny mugs and pretty tea sets, card cases and pill boxes, cozy robes and slippersbook lover gifts, cat lover gifts, men's socks and women's socks, keychains with quotes, handkerchiefs and bandanas, funny oven mitts and tea towels, sweary profanity gifts, adult coloring books, bespoke gift baskets, and joke or White Elephant Gifts.

The company's gift ideas under $30 category offers curated selections organized by recipient, occasion, and interest, making small business shopping as convenient as corporate alternatives while supporting independent makers.

Human-Centered Warehouse Operations

The campaign contrasts GetBullish's Brooklyn warehouse operation with what Dziura calls "dystopian fulfillment center culture" at major corporate retailers. The company's small team – anywhere from 3-7 people depending on the season – knows customer names, remembers repeat orders, and occasionally includes handwritten notes with shipments.

"Nobody here is prevented from going to the bathroom while racing a robot to meet a quota, or some other dystopian bullshit," says Dziura.

The human-scale operation enables personalized customer service while maintaining competitive delivery times, often matching corporate platforms for Northeast customers through Brooklyn's proximity to major population centers.

Holiday Shopping as Economic Resistance

The "Brooklyn, Not Billionaires" campaign positions holiday shopping as an opportunity for concrete action on concerns about wealth concentration. Rather than treating small business support as a sacrifice, GetBullish frames it as self-interested investment in alternative economic infrastructure.

"Every dollar spent with small businesses circulates through local economies multiple times before leaving the community," Dziura explained. "Every dollar spent with megacorporations goes directly toward funding further consolidation and political influence."

Supporting Women-Owned Business Networks

GetBullish's vendor relationships prioritize women-owned businesses, creating distribution networks that bypass corporate intermediaries.

"When you buy from us, you're supporting our 200+ vendors, most of whom are women-owned businesses," Dziura said. "When you shop megacorporations, you're funding... well, more corporate consolidation and dudes buying rockets and Senators."
