GetBullish Launches "No Scroll September" Challenge to Combat Mindless Phone Use
Brooklyn founder offers 30-day digital detox program with daily email support and practical alternatives to endless scrolling
BROOKLYN, NY (August 15, 2025) – GetBullish founder Jennifer Dziura has launched "No Scroll September," a month-long challenge designed to help participants break free from mindless scrolling habits that waste time and damage attention spans.
The program, available at https://www.getbullish.com/no-scroll-september-challenge-sign-up-here/, offers daily email support throughout September with practical suggestions for replacing scroll time with meaningful activities like reading, writing, hosting dinner parties, and engaging in real-world connections.
"If you're reading this, I assume you've wasted time scrolling. Or, in some cases, 'doomscrolling,' at the end of which you feel stressed and terrible, except now some of your life is over," Dziura writes in her challenge introduction. "Imagine what you could do – and who you could become – if you stopped."
Addressing Modern Attention Crisis
The challenge responds to widespread concerns about social media's impact on focus, sleep, and real-world relationships. Dziura poses pointed questions to potential participants: "Are you too distractible to read the sort of books you read in high school? Do you go to bed too late every night, while also feeling bad about it? Do you have kids? If so, I'll bet you've ignored them in favor of your phone more times than you want to admit."
The program defines scrolling specifically as "viewing content you did not, prior to opening the app, intend to view" and "doing so repeatedly," distinguishing between purposeful social media use for work or communication versus mindless consumption.
Daily Support and Practical Alternatives
Participants receive daily emails throughout September containing contemplative quotes and specific suggestions for productive activities. Dziura encourages alternatives ranging from hosting weekly dinner parties to taking phone-free playground visits with children.
"Remember when people actually listened to an entire album, without doing much else besides listening?" the challenge asks, emphasizing sustained attention as a skill worth recovering.
The challenge accommodates various levels of social media dependency, offering strategies for those who need platforms for work versus those who can eliminate apps entirely. Suggestions include password protection through trusted contacts, timer-based usage, and creating specific task lists before opening social apps.
Philosophy of Intentional Living
The program reflects Dziura's broader philosophy of deliberate living and resistance to cultural patterns that undermine human agency. Her approach combines practical behavior modification with deeper questions about how people want to spend their finite time and attention.
"You may find it edifying to decide what you will use the time for instead," she writes, encouraging participants to proactively choose alternative activities rather than simply avoiding phones.
The challenge offers a printable calendar for tracking progress but also emphasizes intrinsic rewards: "All the free time and peace of mind should be hard to miss! What you do with that is up to you."
Building on Digital Wellness Movement
Though not the first no-scroll initiative – the UK's Royal Society for Public Health created "Scroll Free September" in 2018 but does not seem to have continued it past then – Dziura's more aggressive versions suggests breaking your addiction more completely, rather than milder suggestions such as "no social media past 6pm."
The challenge aligns with her recent editorial work examining algorithmic manipulation and digital platforms' exploitation of human psychology, offering constructive action alongside cultural criticism.
Annual Intention with Future Vision
Dziura plans to make No Scroll September an annual event, though she notes with characteristic humor that "perhaps in several years, the idea that mindless scrolling is a problem will seem quaint once people have devices embedded directly in their eyeballs."
