Press Release: GetBullish Launches "Gifts from Brooklyn, Not Billionaires" Campaign
GetBullish Launches "Gifts from Brooklyn, Not Billionaires" Campaign for Holiday Shopping
Brooklyn shop encourages small business support with reminder that "Jeff Bezos already has a rocket"
BROOKLYN, NY (November 15, 2024) – As holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, Brooklyn-based GetBullish has launched their "Gifts from Brooklyn, Not Billionaires" campaign, encouraging consumers to choose small businesses over corporate giants who already control vast swaths of American infrastructure.
The feminist gift shop's cheeky campaign comes as Amazon prepares for another record-breaking Black Friday, while small businesses struggle to compete with the retail giant's logistics and pricing power.
GetBullish founder Jennifer Dziura argues that the choice between small and large retailers isn't just about supporting local business—it's about preventing further corporate consolidation of daily life.
"Other small businesses are not our competition," said Dziura, who founded GetBullish as a career advice column in 2010 before expanding into retail. "Small businesses are competing with giant corporations that already own our basic infrastructure of life. Amazon doesn't just sell consumer goods anymore—they own AWS, which powers half the internet, and they even own OneMedical, which is literally my doctor's office. We can't compete in shipping you toilet paper that arrives tomorrow, but holiday gifts are a perfect time to shop small."
Holiday Shopping with 90% Less Cardboard Waste
Beyond philosophical concerns about corporate power, GetBullish's campaign highlights practical benefits of shopping small.
The Brooklyn warehouse ships multi-item orders in single packages, meaning customers who buy gifts for the whole family receive one thoughtfully packed box instead of the multiple packages – with associated packaging waste – typical of Amazon orders.
"It's common during the holidays that customers order 20 or more items at once," Dziura explained. "If you do that from a big retailer, you can expect anywhere from 5-15 different packages. Ever open a big ol' box to find one single tiny item? So much cardboard to dispose of!"
Brooklyn Warehouse with a Personal Touch
GetBullish's holiday collection emphasizes affordable gift options, with most items priced under $20 and many under $10. Popular white elephant gifts include funny bathroom sprays ($14.99),sarcastic refrigerator magnets ($5.95), and sweary pen sets ($9.95-$14.95).
Operating from a reimagined warehouse space in Industry City on the Brooklyn waterfront, GetBullish offers an alternative to orders packed by robots. The company's small team knows customer names, remembers repeat orders, and occasionally includes hand-written notes with shipments.
Supporting Small Business Networks, Not Monopolies
The campaign encourages customers to view small business shopping as infrastructure investment rather than charity. GetBullish's success enables the company to stock inventory from 150+ small brands, creating a distrbution network that bypasses corporate middlemen.
"Every dollar spent with small businesses circulates through local economies seven times before leaving the community," Dziura noted.
