The exact date of the invention of hats is unknown, but early forms of head coverings were developed for practical reasons such as protection from the elements, with the first pictorial evidence dating to around 3200 BCE in ancient Egypt. The mummy of Ötzi the Iceman, a man who lived around 3300 BCE, provides evidence of one of the first actual hats discovered.

That said, hats are not just practical necessities; they’re personality amplifiers. A hat says, “Yes, I planned my look today,” even if you rolled out of bed five minutes ago.

Take the Heart Beanie Pom Pom Gray — it’s cozy, sparkly, and gives you the vibe of someone who could host a wholesome winter gathering… or just keep their ears warm while muttering about capitalism on the way to the subway. Then there’s the Sorry Not Sorry Beanie, which lets people know you’re not here for unnecessary drama, but you are here for warm knits and unapologetic style. And for those dramatic days when life demands a flourish? The Sparkle Embroidered Beret in Pink is basically a mic drop you wear on your head.

Of course, hats have a long, strange history. In medieval times, headwear wasn’t just fashion — it was how society ranked you. Nobles got fancy feathers, peasants got itchy wool, and someone definitely died from wearing too many ostrich plumes at once. Fast forward a few centuries, and hats became symbols of rebellion (looking at you, berets). From top hats that looked like stovepipes to bonnets you could probably land a helicopter on, hats have always been about making a statement. So really, slipping on a beanie with an embroidered slogan is just you carrying on a very noble (and slightly ridiculous) tradition.

This collection isn’t just about historical re-enactments, though — it’s about everyday hats that make you grin, raise eyebrows, or silently tell the world to get lost. Brands like Bewaltz, Primitives by Kathy, Jasper Trading LLC, JOSSLYN, Hadley Wren, and Paper & Quartz bring you everything from cheeky embroidered caps to whimsical knit creations. It’s like having a secret code on your head, and only the bold get it.

And while some people collect stamps or coins, we’re firmly in the “collect hats” camp. Because one day you’re in the mood for something soft and cozy, and the next you need a beret that says, “Yes, I read poetry in cafés, and no, I don’t care if it makes me a cliché.” A rotation of hats is basically an emotional support system for your head.
